Background

Ryan Talbot is an American track and field athlete who competes in the Decathlon. Born on October 7, 2000, he hails from Alto, Michigan, and attended Forest Hills Central in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His mother, Sally Talbot, was a Michigan State track heptathlete.

In May 2022, Talbot won the Big Ten Conference decathlon with a Michigan State University school record. He was selected to compete for America at the 2023 Pan American Games. He won the bronze medal in the decathlon at the event in Santiago, Chile, in November 2023. His personal best in Decathlon is 8064, which he achieved in Minneapolis in 2022.

Talbot's diet is unique. He follows a carnivore diet, consuming only animal products. For daily eating habits, he eats roughly three pounds of meat. He sources his food from local farmers and buys grass-fed ground beef in large quantities.

Talbot's journey in the carnivore diet originated during his junior year of college when he felt he was not performing to his standards. He decided the change in his diet will help him reach a higher level of success. After going carnivore he started feeling significantly better. His hamstring injuries subsided and his recovery was way faster than normal. He began to feel much healthier and was able to become stronger and faster, he still claims to be finding new benefits to the diet as he goes. He competed that year in the decathlon, and won the Jim Click Shootout as well as the Big Ten conference championship, all while not eating carbohydrates.

The Decathlon: A Test of Athletic Prowess

Origin of the Decathlon

The decathlon developed from the ancient pentathlon competitions held at the ancient Greek Olympics. Pentathlons involved five disciplines - long jump, discus throw, javelin throw, sprint, and a wrestling match. Introduced in Olympia during 708 BC, this competition was extremely popular for many centuries. The modern decathlon first appeared at the 1912 Games. The name "decathlon" was formed, in analogy to the word "pentathlon", from Greek δέκα (déka, meaning "ten") and ἄθλος (áthlos, or ἄθλον, áthlon, meaning "contest" or "prize").

Aristotle describes the intense competition as: "A body capable of enduring all efforts, either of the racecourse or of bodily strength... This is why the athletes in the pentathlon are most beautiful." (Aristotle, Rhetoric 1361b)

Recent History of the Decathlon

The current official decathlon world record holder is Frenchman Kevin Mayer, who scored a total of 9,126 points at the 2018 Décastar in France.

Description of the Decathlon Events

In modern athletics, the ten events are:

  • 100 metres: This is a sprint event. Athletes set up in starting blocks and sprint 100 meters to the finish line, while staying in their assigned lane.
  • Long jump: This is a horizontal jump for distance. It's one of the oldest athletic contests, dating back to the ancient Greek Olympics.
  • Shot put: Athletes throw a heavy spherical object as far as possible.
  • High jump: This is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it.
  • 400 metres: This is a sprint around the track in the stadium. One lap around the track covers the distance.
  • 110 metres hurdles: This is a sprint race in which each athlete must clear ten hurdles that are evenly spaced along a straight course.
  • Discus throw: Athletes throw a heavy disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors.
  • Pole vault: This is a track and field event in which a person uses a long flexible pole as an aid to jump over a bar.
  • Javelin throw: Athletes throw a spear-like object made of metal, fiberglass, or carbon fiber, with men's and women's competitions being held.
  • 1500 metres: This is a premier middle-distance track event in athletics. The distance has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1972 for women.

Carnivore.jpg

Since his Junior year of college, Ryan has followed a strict carnivore diet consisting of almost exclusively meat and eggs.

This means that he consumes roughly three pounds of meat and a dozen eggs daily. He sources his food from local farmers and sometimes purchases a whole cow at once, which is about 600 pounds of meat.

Ryan's journey on the carnivore diet started when he felt he was not athletically performing to his standards. He decided to change his diet to help him reach a higher level of success. He believes that his diet has helped him recover faster from injuries and improve his performance. For instance, he won the Jim Click Shootout decathlon and the Big Ten Championship while following the carnivore diet.

As you can see Ryan is exceptionally enthusiastic about his diet and believes in the results of it based on his personal success.

Here are some quotes from Ryan regarding his diet:

"I feel like I'm recovering faster from workouts."

"I've noticed a significant improvement in my performance since I started this diet."

"I believe this diet has helped me reach a higher level of success."
